When Tristan and I shared our respective plans to our friends and colleagues, we often get variations of the same question: “Oh, you’re not going to Kenya with Tristan but will be traveling alone? Why??”
The answer is simple: because I’ve lived in Kenya for half a year in 2015, and I want to experience new places this time around!!!
The opportunity to quit my job, travel the world, and explore my other passions doesn’t come often. At the same time, Tristan has a golden opportunity to use his data science skills on something he’s passionate about, together with an excellent team of people at Tulaa. We both agree that both of us should be able to pursue what’s important to us. If that means that we can’t be in the same place for a period of time, then that’s okay!
Don’t get me wrong, I really wished that we could experience these life experiences together and I would miss him a hell lot. Tristan left NYC a day earlier than me, and when he climbed into the cab to the airport I was questioning myself - why did I decide to be away from this wonderful human again??
But that’s how we support each other - we give each other the space and the opportunity to grow in our own ways, and that’s why our relationship is so valuable. We have utmost trust on each other too, so we’re not in the least worried about our relationship.
At the same time, we have very similar ideals, interests, and priorities in life. Therefore, in the grand scheme of things we know for sure that we will end up at the same place, together.
I am extremely thankful for Tristan, and at the same time I can’t wait to see him in South Africa in December!!!
